Something doesn’t seem right in Syria. The collapse of the Assad regime seems staged. There was almost no resistance to the rebels in fortified cities that held our for years. It doesn’t make sense. Could it be a trap to bleed the West similar to Afghanistan? Of course Biden will run head first into a trap. President Trump’s more reserved response is more prudent. The more I think about it the more I question what we are seeing.

That is absolutely what it is. They held it in reserve for when it was needed when business was slowing down. They could have helped do this very same at any time in the past but did not. They let the field sit fallow until it was needed to seed and and plant a crop.
Morale collapse is a real thing. There are many recent cases.
The fall of Mosul to ISIS in 2014 (and about half of the Shiite parts of northern Iraq) went down exactly the same way.
The ISIS offensives in Eastern Syria in 2014 in fact also went the same way, as did the attack on Palmyra in 2015.

That’s how Arabs/muslims fight. Or surrender.
They are not like German soldiers in WWII battling an inevitable.
If it looks like they will eventually lose, they immediately cut and run.
