What is destructive to the Republic is the deliberate fabrication and dissemination of calumnious narratives. By the time they’re exposed irreparable reputational damage has been done and trust in our institutions is eroded.
I've written before about the Left's habit of resorting to lies, projection, and one or more of the Logical Fallacies. They do this because if they stated their intentions openly, more often than not rational people would laugh them out of office.
Telling folks who never went to college or who paid off their loans that they would soon be on the hook for someone else's $100K tab for a master's degree in Lesbian Dance Theory is a good way to find yourself unemployed. Changing the language is another leftist tactic. Call someone anti-choice rather than pro-life, or anti-migrant instead of pro-sovereignty and you change the entire discussion.
Dan Bongino frequently says that you can judge the rightness of your actions by the degree of outrage it engenders in your opponent. If the Left reacts like rabid dogs to your choice, you know you're on the right track. If they're quiet or even worse, supportive then you should probably rethink your decision.
One despicable tactic was described by former Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She was deep in the throes of psychological projection when she said this on CNN: “It’s called a wrap-up smear. You make up something. Then you have the press write about it. And then you say, everybody is writing about this charge. It’s a tool of an authoritarian.”
A classic example of this is the "Pee Tape" hoax against President Trump.
They've been doing it for years, especially when it comes to nominations of Republicans to Cabinet positions and seats on the Supreme Court.

Yet more proof (as if more is necessary) that the left/leftists are mentally ill. They all suffer from sociopathy to one degree or another. Top that off with drugs (rx’d or street) and you have an unpredictable hot mess on your hands.
The simple fact of the matter is that Leftists discovered that they can break the law and then, with no evidence, accuse their enemies of doing what they just did.
Their enemies (us) are often caught by surprise, stumble, bumble, and become the story.
It has worked very well for them.

When Obama was running for office, that was the first time I had heard of Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals”, so I tried to get it from the library because there was no way I was going to buy it.
I had to wait 8 months to get it, and when I read it, I had a very difficult time doing so because I found the content so repulsive. It was real work reading it.
Then, when I grasped the evil incarnate inherent in the work, I realized it would be a good thing for other Conservatives to know about, and I resolved to make an audiobook recording that I would offer to my friends who I thought should know about this evil, which by all accounts is the playbook the Left runs off.
I have zero reservations about copyright protections for that hideous and reprehensible work, but would not put myself in a situation where that could come to the fore.
But when I tried to dictate it (something I do, as I dictate audiobooks) I could not hide the disgust in my voice. Just could not do it. And I have found that, to make it palatable for a listener, I cannot have that disgust in my voice. It makes it unlistenable.
It was one of the most immoral books I have ever read.

While that statement is true on it’s face it is unreasonable to expect the truth from someone who is facing the fact that the telling the truth is not going to end well for them. Tracking back and revealing the source of a smear is an exercise in futility unless severe, painful, and possibly permanent consequences are visited upon that source. A verbal slap in the wrist is not going to change anything.
One way to address this would be a law stipulating that someone running for political office can ONLY speak about what he or she propose to do and that mentioning a political opponent is illegal. The person selling THEMSELVES and THEIR ideas the best will win the election. One is more likely to be truthful when presenting oneself knowing that if dishonesty is discovered the campaign is over. Currently, we have a system that rewards liars and deceivers during political campaigns where they insinuate the dangers of electing their opponent rather than why you should vote for them.
