It will be interesting to see how the Yankees and Mets go from here.
No detail yet about how much of the total is guaranteed (different from no deferment). He’ll be waived long before 15 years are up, and some other team will pick up the burden.
“Mets, Soto Agree to Record Contract”
I didn’t even realize the Mets had a recording studio.
*yes i know it was a bad pun*
For every 1 of such mammoth, record-breaking sports contracts that looks like a good deal for the team in retrospect, it seems to me that there are 10, 15 or maybe 20 busts. How does Juan Soto add $60 million annually to the bottom line of the Mets?
The average MLB team generated $378 million in revenue in 2024. Even Soto turns the Mets into a World Series favorite (something that the odds do NOT favor), does he add $60 mn in net income? I’m just not seeing it.
He is 26. So probably he has 6 solid years before injuries set in, that keep him out of playing entire seasons. Anyways, more stuff for sportsball believers to bet and lose money on.
A contract until he is 41 years old? They better hope someone else eats that. Or can afford to eat that.
Bobby Bonilla Day explained: Why the Mets still pay him $1.19M today and every July 1
58-year-old Bobby Bonilla will collect a check for $1,193,248.20 from the New York Mets, as he has and will every July 1 from 2011 through 2035.
That’s an obscene amount of money. I somehow doubt he has 15yrs left!
I mean...good for him to scarf up the cash thrown at him but, dayum!
I am glad my Nats traded him when they could. Although he will be back to persecute us! lol!
