A visit to Pearl Harbor is a must for all Americans capable of making it. I compare my emotions there to how I felt when I visited Gettysburg— Awe and sadness.

A good friend of mine is Old Virginia, an ancestor of his is Martha Dandridge Custis, i.e. Martha Washington. Had a chance to spend a couple of days with him about 18 months ago. Best tour guide I ever had. We went to Appomattox and other historical sites.

I was his Best Man when he got married. I heard her speak English for the first time during the visit. Other memories flooded back. He was like Dick Winters from Band of Brothers: cool, calm, always made the right deccision. Me, I have no idea who my character would have been. I was just a good Platoon Leader who knew his job. Our CO was like Captain Sobel, he couldn't read a map to save his life.

Gettysburg is a special place, have been there a few times. My kids freaked out, our hotel room was a stone's throw from the cemetary.

I too remember those feelings. I was there in 1987 and what struck me was the overwhelming number of tourists, I would say 90%, were Japanese. As a young military guy, I was not expecting that.
