Do you need to show ID to get on a bus? Even an interstate bus?

“Do you need to show ID to get on a bus? Even an interstate bus?”
A quick Internet search says that the official answer is “yes” but the real world answer is “no”.
That means they have the right to ask for ID but rarely do so.

I don't know about Greyhound, but the airport bus services look for something, but they don't check them thoroughly.

Do you need to show ID to get on a bus? Even an interstate bus? I used to take the bus regularly to go to out-of-state medical appointments. I was always asked for my ID when I purchased a ticket.
