The reason I asked is because Ethernet<>Wifi. The first is wired, the second is wireless.

Anyhow, assuming your girlfriend’s computer is a desktop, if this is a hardware problem, either the USB port or the Wifi USB plug/dongle is fried.

Assuming you have more than one free USB port, unplug the Wifi dongle, plug into a different port. If that fails, the WiFi dongle may need replacement.
