That reference to a “smell” for bios and nukes is a bit of a casual comment. Yes, we indeed do “sniff” out decay products, fissile mat’l, components of bios, etc. Bio weapons tend to be two part. They do nothing, including smell, until the two components are mixed. In the case of nuke related stuff the “sniff” is not olfactory but rather a radiation count of one sort or another. When the Big Fukushima went off, for example, I “sniffed” out its leakage five days later around my shop-——in Oregon——five days later. Using a radiation detector. (same path the WW II balloon bombs took to get here.)
So, yeah, somebody might very well be “sniffing” around for Persian nuke waste.
