The plant is actually called “rape”, and until Canada decided that rapeseed oil had a marketing problem that’s what it was called. Canola is an acronym for Canada Oil Low Acid. It’s a patented trademark owned by the Canadian Canola Council.
Canola oil has a high Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratio. I think that this is true of most seed oils, and that seems to be behind the claim that they are bad for you.
I don’t know if there is any proof that seed oils are actually harmful or if this is just another health food fad. It’s a recent obsession.
