Let’s just say this - I won’t suffer from radiation poisoning. I’m much too
close to several targets.

I’m right where God put me to absorb as much as possible.
F the world, I love Jesus!

When I was in fourth grade our teacher’s husband was a B52 pilot. We would have our once a month drills.
There was one time when she must have been having a bad day…we overheard her complaining, “We are ten miles away from the base….none of this is going to matter.”
Not exactly what a ten year old needed to year. LOL

One of the interesting legends that have developed is that radiation poisoning will be a huge problem over and above that from the immediate heat/blast/EMP effects. Actually, in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki the number of radiation sickness deaths was less than 10% of those from direct effects (those that would have resulted from an equivalent-power, non-nuclear weapon if there were such a thing).
If you're one of those 10%, possibly millions over and above the 100 million or so deaths from direct effects, then the radiation effects are a very, very big deal. But if you're reasonably far from a direct target, then it's not likely to kill you. Moving to a 'safe' location can be effective.
One of the really frightening things is that - about the time the USSR was collapsing - the Soviets were writing papers on how to fight and *win* a nuclear war. We (the US) need to recognise that Russia lost 10% of it's total population in WWII, and another 10% before that in Stalin's purges, and came out of that dual decimation stronger than ever. They can envision having 20% of their population killed and still ruling the post-war world. We can either recognize that our own 'boogy-man' fear of nuclear weapons where the first one used means the end of life is overstated (at least in their minds), or find a way to 'win' at every level of conflict so that none of them is tried by a fanatic - but not necessarily insane - adversary.
