I thought leaving a baby in the box was supposed to be anonymous.

You thought wrong. Read the excerpt!

'The Safe Haven Law in Idaho allows for the surrender of an infant who is unharmed and healthy. Therefore, this was not a legal surrender under state law as it does not meet the criteria for Safe Haven surrender,' a Safe Haven news release reads. Monica Kelsey, the founder of Safe Haven Baby Boxes, said in a social media post at the time: 'We are heartbroken. Anonymity is only allowed when an infant is safely surrendered completely unharmed.'

The perp in this case did NOT leave a baby in the box. The perp left a corpse. You can't expect to leave, e.g., live animals, dead babies, household waste, or anthrax spores in the box and then invoke some "right to anonymity."
