Ukraine could drop its plan to join NATO for sure. That way it will not need NATO if Russia lives up to the treaty and if Russia does not live up to the treaty then Ukraine joins NATO. This would be a camouflaged surrender for Russia and a way to get out of a terrible mistake with a modicum of face saving.
