There have been very few Presidential or Vice Presidential candidates with beards or mustaches in the 20th and 21st centuries. It was very popular in the 1800s.

William Howard Taft (Republican) Lost 1912, Won 1908 Mustache

Charles Evans Hughes (Republican) Lost 1916 Mustache

Theodore Roosevelt (Progressive) Lost 1912, (Republican) Won 1904 Mustache

Grover Cleveland (Democrat) Won 1892, lost 1888, Won 1884 Mustache

Benjamin Harrison (Republican) Lost 1892, Won 1888 Beard

James G. Blaine (Republican) Lost 1884

All of the candidates in 1888 and 1884 had beards or mustaches

The following third party candidates more recently had beards or mustaches.

Howie Hawkins (Green) 2024 Beard Bob Barr (Libertarian) 2008 Mustache Andre Marrou (Libertarian) 1992 Beard Earl Browder (Communist) 1940 Mustache Roger W. Babson (Prohibition) 1940 Beard William Hope Harvey (Liberty) 1932 Mustache Herman P. Faris (Prohibition) 1924 Mustache

Neal Dow (Prohibition) was unusual in the late 1880s in that he had neither a beard, nor mustache. His home is around the corner from where I live and is open to the public for tours and info on the Prohibition movement. Portland Maine is far from being a dry town these days.

Sometimes a beard is just a beard?

Sorry, I shouldn’t have been so flippant and short. If a man leaves his face alone he will have a beard. A woman won’t. Beards on men happen with no effort. Beards aren’t natural on women. You can identify a man from 100 yards away and more if he has a beard. Dress a man with a beard like a woman he still looks like a man. Some shaven men, some shaven men can pass as a woman from a short distance, especially with makeup. It’s called “drag”.

Masculine faces don’t need beards. The rest do.

THIS. We can all think of leading men in old Hollywood movies, for example, that didn't need a beard to make their faces look masculine.

I tried the “No-shave November” and had to give up yesterday. Too irritating for me.

Thank you for steering the conversation this direction’

Dang, if I’d been on the ball I’d have gotten in at post #2 to state this fact.

Personally, I am not a fan of beards or mustaches

Fan at all of proof reading? First President or VP to have a beard perhaps? Heard via The Daily Show sometime back fist is also a verb.

I don’t like facial hair as a rule, but I’ve seen him with and without a beard. He looks better with one.

His cabinet appointees should all grow beards at least until they are confirmed !
Biden’s looney bin selections were getting breast implants, butthole bleaching, chopadickoffofme’s, and hormone therapy.
In Trumps administration the Men are manly and the Women are clearly women.

“the man looks 10 years old without it.”

Also a little dough-y.

Yes, a shaven man can look masculine, point taken. He will look more masculine with a beard.

All the guys in my family have beards. They would look strange without them.

Why stop at 1888?

1881-1885: Chester A. Arthur, mustache.

1881-death: James A. Garfield, beard.

1877-1881: Rutherford B. Hayes, beard.

1869-1887: Ulysses. S. Grant, beard.

1865-1869: Andrew Johnson, clean-shaven

1861-1865: Abraham Lincoln, beard.

I think it’s so great that Trump is putting manly men into high positions. Boys and young men will have them as role models instead of the bun-wearing, ear-pierced, soy-eating pansies that have been front and center for so many years.

Hegseth, Vance, etc....

Richard Nixon deserves an honorable mention for his 5 o’clock shadow.

I had a beard for a while and i kid you not, but i saw myself in a dream one day and my thought during the dream was that “i look really bad with a beard” and have been beardless ever since. Sometimes though when i’m shaving i think “aren’t we essentially telling God that He made a mistake giving us men a beard whenever we shave?” I don’t have a good answer for that, but i continue shaving anyway.

That depends on the man and depends on the beard.
