All this garbage talk has triggered a recessed memory of a line from a movie I cannot recall. The movie was about the New York punk scene in the late 70s-early 80s and it included the line “If they treat you like garbage, wear a garbage bag!” And all these people showed up in Times Square with their face piercings, Mohawks and garbage bag dresses. Did this event really happen? Was it from Sid & Nancy? or Pump Up the Volume? I cannot recall. When I searched for the quote, it came up in the Tim Curry film about the punk scene called Times Square, which I know I have never seen, so perhaps the line was lifted and placed in another movie?

Thinking of all this led me to thinking how the New York punks were considered so OUTRAGEOUS. Total outcasts. And now look around you…they are everywhere (at least the way they dress). They sell that look at every shopping mall and have done so for decades now. Wearing pink hair meant you were an absolute rebel, and I remember my epic battles with my mom over just one extra piercing in my ear, or just a little strip of colored hair spray for an event. Now, sporting that look marks you as one of the Borg! The punk scene somehow transitioned from “Stick it to The Man!” To “Assimilate now!”

And now we’re the ones who are sounding the battle cry “If they call you garbage, wear a garbage bag!” Did you ever think you would be the new rebels?
