It all came down to Trump refusing to simply follow their advice on the Afghanistan War. Instead, he went directly to enlisted servicemen for their input, and that move enraged the big military egos.

It's like all the Generals who advised Lincoln to fire Grant because he was, well Hitler wasn't a thing then, but he was a drunkard, they assured him, had to be since he imagined himself a general which he couldn't have been because he wasn't a real general in the eyes of the perfumed princes of the day.

General George B. McClellan was an arrogant piece of shit, and lied to President Lincoln just like Milley, and the other Pentagon Generals lied to President Trump.

Not long after President Lincoln appointed McClellan the General in Chief of the Union Army in November 1861, Lincoln, Secretary of State William H. Seward and Lincoln's Secretary John Hay made a late-night visit to the General's home. Lincoln had previously made other late-night visits to see the General. This night when they arrived, McClellan was out when they called. They decided to wait until he came home. When McClellan arrived home, he was told of his visitors, and instead of meeting with them, he headed up to bed. Lincoln and the others waited for another half-hour and were finally advised that McClellan had gone to bed. It was the last time Lincoln ever visited General McClellan's home, and in March 1862, Lincoln removed him from his command.

In 1863, McClellan threw his hat into the President race, and was nominated by the Democrats to run against Lincoln in the election of 1864. Lincoln won with approximately 55% of the vote to McClellan's 45%. Despite being popular with the troops, they voted for President Lincoln 3-1.
