Inside the Republican drama over Mitch McConnell’s successor
Semafor ^

Posted on 10/22/2024 4:50:50 AM PDT by Tench_Coxe

Even as Republican senators prepare to elect Mitch McConnell’s successor as leader, there’s a debate raging among them over how much power to give the winner.

On one side are conservatives like Utah’s Mike Lee, who wants candidates for GOP leader to endorse diffusing their own authority by requiring high numbers of Republican senators to endorse critical tactical decisions. On the other side of the divide are senators like North Carolina’s Thom Tillis, who says any Republican agreeing to Lee’s demands would lose his vote for leader.

(snip)

Still, plenty of Republican senators see the leader’s job as requiring unpopular decisions, and they note that some of the changes Lee’s group is pushing would dramatically shift how the GOP operates as the party is — according to most polls -— favored to take back Senate control next month.

Congress has a spending problem.

It goes far beyond the fault of any one person. It is a system spending problem.

I tend to think a corporate value-added tax is order for debt financing. The rates might be half the German rates. The tax might bring in a about $1.2 trillion a year. This would pay the interest on the debt and initially a $200 billion annual debt reduction.

For the first three years S corporations would be exempt. Unincorporated businesses would be totally exempt.

Over time, unincorporated businesses would proliferate, bring more competition and lowering pricing.

IMHO, Senator Kennedy would make an outstanding Senate Majority Leader!

Kennedy's rejoinders to Schumer would bring years of enjoyment to watching the Senate. CSPAN viewership would go through the roof. :-) More powerful advertising the Party couldn't buy at any price.

Not a lot of good choices among these mentioned. Can’t be one of Mitch’s *itches though for sure.

He definitely would. We’ll be stuck with the guy from NC Tillis because republican senators never learn.

I have also thought Senators give up too much power to their caucus leaders. It would be different if those leaders saw themselves as a servant leader - their to lead in service to the members. Instead, they often lead to rule over more than to serve.

Marsha Blackburn — (of course someone will find fault — that is true of any and all) I think she will be loyal to the Constitution and to MAGA. Plus, she’s probably gonna be a short-termer, at her age (early 70s).

I agree whole-heartedly. But that would mean lots of Senators giving up some of their power/control. Sort of like asking them to give up their 100% pensions.
