There’s no Nobel prize in computer science & mathematics. I think Hopfield is a physicist by a academic training. Maybe not one could agree what was Nobel worthy in physics this year. So there’s a Nobel prize not filled and nature abhors a vacuum.

Anyway John Forbes Nash a mathematician got a Nobel in economics though his contributions to economics were as indirect as these guys contribution to physics.

Archibald had visited Mittag-Leffler and, on his report, it would seem that M-L *believed* that the absence of a Nobel Prize in mathematics was due to an estrangement between the two men. (This at least is the natural reading, but not the only possible one.)


I wonder...what was the other reading, and why is that one more credible than the natural reading?

Historians clearly exaggerate when they say there is no evidence of any intention for a Nobel math prize.
