Agree. Our area is pretty remote. A hundred miles in any direction to a large town.
A few years ago we started getting an influx of old order Amish moving in.

I’d take that as a compliment! The Amish are great people!

Maybe he was attacking an alligator made out of tires:

Just the opposite here. Just went through a hurricane, and I still don’t miss shoveling snow, or cutting & splitting 15 cords of wood every year.

Splitting 15 cords of wood a year would turn anyone off. The most I’ve ever split is about a rick. Hard work for me. Does build up muscles I don’t otherwise use though.

Full disclosure...
I heated the house & large shop with an outdoor boiler. Did the splitting with powered equipment, but all was cut & stacked by hand.
Now, I go fishing, or just cruise the ICW down to the Keys.

Sounds like a good trade off.

We go through about 5 ricks every winter, just for the ambiance. We don’t always use our own wood, just sometimes. If the pieces are too big, I do split them.

Our neighbor has a gas log splitter. We’ve borrowed it twice, when we had fallen trees that we’ve used over the years. We mix it in with wood that we purchase. I do the stacking.

For light snows, we use a shovel and keep up with it regularly. It does no good to let it accumulate. We do have a snow blower for the heavier times. I’m grateful for that when it’s necessary.

I think I’ve been away from Florida now more than I lived there. I do miss the sunshine. I DON’T miss the everyday traffic. It seems the older I get, the more I don’t want to be in a bigger city. I like amenities, but I don’t mind driving to them. I guess I’ve adjusted in that way. My everyday life is peaceful, not hectic. I like that. Kinda like your fishing, I guess.
