Stevie Nicks had a nice singing voice but she never learned to sing properly and thus ruined her vocal chords.
Like most bands, the lead voice becomes part of the signature sound over time. And, as humans get over 75 years their singing voices tend to deteriorate. FM was a fine band, saw them a few times and they did a nice job.
