Hurricane Milton supercharges into monster 180mph storm so quickly experts call for it to be given unprecedented Category 6 status: 'This is nothing short of astronomical'

With Hurricane Milton hitting winds of up to 180 miles per hour and at such a high speed, scientists are wondering if the storm defies the five category system and should go up to a Category 6.

Florida’s Gulf Coast braced on Tuesday for the impact of Hurricane Milton’s near-record winds and expected massive storm surge, which could bring destruction to areas already reeling from Helene’s devastation 12 days ago and still recovering from Ian’s wrath two years ago.

Almost the entirety of Florida’s west coast was under a hurricane warning early on Tuesday as the Category 5 storm and its 165mph winds crept toward the state at 9mph, sucking energy from the Gulf of Mexico’s warm water.

The strongest Atlantic hurricane on record is 1980’s Allen, which reached wind speeds of 190 mph as it moved through the Caribbean and Gulf before striking Texas and Mexico.

The storm, which CNN called 'the strongest on Earth in 2024,' was described by an Orlando meteorologist as 'nothing short of astronomical.'

'I am at a loss for words to meteorlogically describe you the storms small eye and intensity,' Noah Bergen said.

In 1969, Hurricane Camille came ashore as a Cat. 5 storm in Mississippi. That was a nasty one. It had 175 mph winds, and I may be wrong, but I seem to remember that it had gusts over 200 mph.

Camille is the one I compare all others against.

Regardless of that, they’re all bad news.

Camille killed the most people in Virginia, from flooding.

Prayers for your sis and her restaurant.
They say this thing will drop to a category 3, but higher storm surge than Helene.

Camille is, by any measurement, is still the single most powerful storm to ever make a direct hit on the MAINLAND US. Camille changed the way US forecasters looked at Hurricanes. The Saffir-Simpson scale was invented because of the aftermath of Camille. The last NOAA Hurricane Hunter flew thru Camille 6 hours before landfall and recorded 901 MB and sustained winds at 190 M.P.H with gusts to 210. The aircraft suffered engine damage and had to make an emergency landing in Houston. No other crews would volunteer to fly thru her after that.

We are waiting until midday tomorrow to make the decision. I am not in a flood zone (5 miles from ocean and 38’ above sea level)

That should protect you from the storm surge, but not hurricane winds.

The last map I saw had it dropping to a Hurricane 1 as it exits the east side of Florida.

I haven’t really followed this storm but I’m immediately suspicious of any hyperbolic story with multiple authors, in this case, three. In news articles, the stupidity grows exponentially as the number of authors increase.

Thanks. I DO remember that. It was a true monster. One of my daughters’ Godparents are moving back here to Northern Illinois, after living in The Villages in Florida. They already bought a place here, but haven’t yet sold the place in Florida.

I hope they have something left to sell by the time this is over.

LORD have mercy on these people I pray, in the Name of Jesus! Hurricane, I speak to you, in the Name of Jesus, and command you to dissipate, in the Name of Jesus! Father your word says that we can speak to the mountain, commanding it to be removed and cast into the sea, so I speak to this hurricane and command it to be removed in Jesus Name. I do this in faith, believing that your Word is true! Amen.

Never even bothered with 2nd or 3rd. Went from first to high gear and floor boarded it.
What..from a strong tropical storm to a cat 5 in 24 hours or so?
