To: stars & stripes forever
Back in 1985 I was assigned as the Intel briefer for the Coast Guard Atlantic Fleet Commander (4 stars), Adm. Paul A. Yost, jr. This was for a JCS Exercise that was taking place at the same time as a major drug operation in the Caribbean. Coast Guard Intel was stretched thin so the Navy helped out.

I was a LT at the time and as such, the junior man on the staff. One day I was tagging along at the back of the pack on the way over to the O-club for lunch when the admiral ran into a Senior Chief who had been a 2nd class petty officer on the admiral's first cutter. The admiral remembered the man's name, his wife's name and the name of his kids. This explained why I never had to tell the admiral ANYTHING twice.

Every flag officer I ever worked for had an eidetic memory. I just wish the Chiefs of Staff had the same.
