Before Trump agreed to the terms of these debates with Biden. Trump’s position was, no more debates.
He came to this decision after the biased 2020 Presidential Debates
He changed his mind after looking at Biden and seeing he belonged in a nursing home.
As far as Vance not showing up, that would be a stupid thing to do. I’m glad you aren’t anywhere near the Trump campaign with advice like this.

Yes, at this point. The mistake was agreeing to debate with leftist shill "moderators". This is not fully controlled by the Trump campaign. The GOPe will sabotage him at every opportunity.
This should be a Trump-style negotiation. "I propose as moderators Tucker Carlson and Jesse Watters." That would actually be a good debate because both of them have enough confidence in the conservative positions that they would let the Marxist candidate hang himself with his own idiocy.
But at least, if there were some sort of compromise, it might include moderators who feel they need to appear to be fair - as was done in this Trump/Biden debate. Of course, they wanted Biden to hang himself, so they allowed a fair debate.
If Trump proposed conservative moderators, perhaps the compromise would be no moderators at all (as another posting suggested). Of course, the Dhimm candidate would monopolize the time and if the Republican candidate waited politely for the rants to end, he would never get a chance to speak at all. So perhaps there needs to be a simple timekeeper who is not allows to say a word - just light up a signal that the time for one speaker was drawing to a close, then cut off his/her microphone and activate the other.
It will never happen because the GOPe likes to lose, but one can dream.
