The easy way to remember L or R is to make an L shape with your thumb and pointer finger. On the left side the L will be correct, and on the right hand it will be backwards.

That's true if the back of your hand is facing you. If your palm is facing you, your right hand makes the "L".

Yes, but don’t turn your palm towards you. Just look at your hands as you hold them out in front of you. Stick your thumb out on both hands. The L shape is on the left. I taught this to my kids when they were learning left from right. It’s easy and works if you don’t try to make it hard. Apply the KISS rule. Keep it simple, silly.
