And thanks!
But it’s you who are finding them and including them so that we can take in the information faster. That’s what I’m grateful for.
My pleasure, and thanks again. I just posted a topic about a neat vid I’d completely missed, from Darius Arya, along with a couple of others as sidebars, plus FR links. :^)
He’s wrong about one thing. The pyroclastic flow which killed so many at Herculaneum has been known to vulcanologists since 1902 when it was observed and described during the eruption of Mt Pelee in Martinique.
Yep, that’s the one. Professional lip readers to gauge what the soldiers were saying, and professional voice actors to recreate their speech. Combined with colorizing the old footage it is a very impressive work, with full-color authentic WWI footage complete with sound!
Thanks. I think I saw either excerpts on YouTube, or when it was offered free on Amazon Prime or one of the freebie streaming services.
I remember reading an account of the American Civil War by a British military observer. I think it was Arthur Fremantle, but it was decades ago, so I'm not sure. One thing he observed and wrote about, which still sticks with me today, was the habit of many confederate soldiers to carry their toothbrushes stuck through a buttonhole on their lapels, like a boutonniere.
British death records show MANY entries for “teeth” in the 1600s and/or 1700s IIRC. At first, black teeth were a thing among the elite because only they could afford sugar.
I expect people born living in cities on the slope of a volcano don’t give a second thought to the occasional rumble or venting. I’ve spent time in San Salvador, El Salvador, and I asked the occasional local about it when I first got their. Their responses were almost always a shrug of the shoulders and an Alfred E. Newman, “What, me worry?” smile.
I think about how screwed everyone on Santorini would be if the smoking active volcanic islet actually went up. Right now the tourists take short trips to the swim in the warm waters. :^) There’s a slowly declining threshold of discomfort in places of this kind.
