Joe Manchin
Uncommon Analysis ^ | 9/25/2024

Joe Manchin is ending his long and generally successful political career as a sort of a pitiable character, and cautionary tale. The one time flying high Governor of WV, he has a political career that has spanned more than 4 decades. A very popular governor of what was once one of the most reliably democrat state in the Union, he cruised into his Senate spot taking the seat of a WV institution named Robert Byrd in the 2010 election. He has held the seat since then, but facing the ever growing tide of his home states political momentum against him, Manchin finally saw his chances of victory this election were nil, and decided not to run.

Joe Manchin effectively ended his career with a conviction vote on Impeachment against Trump, and put further nails in his coffin with series of party line votes during the Biden administration all this assured his career as a Senator for WV was over. Without his vote none of the 51-50 votes that passed the Senate during Biden’s tenure would have become law, and many of them have been disastrous, particularly for the economy. Manchin knew his vote was needed, and he negotiated various deals in exchange for his votes. However, he also wound up betrayed by his own party, after the 2022 mid terms gave the democrats an effective 51-49 advantage, Manchin was no longer needed to get to to a 50/50 and Kamala casting the tying vote.
