Someone on the comments board on X said they were in the mental health field.
(For what that’s worth).

They said from what they have seen on previous cases her story will likely go like this: put in a hospital for the insane and become medicated, stay there for 2-4 years, get out on supervision, after a few months her care will be relaxed, she will wean herself off the meds, go back to unstable behavior, commit another violent act.

Which is why I always had the opinion being criminally insane isn’t a reason to let people put,, it’s a reason to lock them up and throw the key away.

She may or may not commit future acts of violence.

However, whoever posted on X is off the mark.

Competency to stand trial is not the same as criminal responsibility (not guilty by reason of insanity or NGRI.) Competency to stand trial involves an evaluation of very simple things. Does the individual have the ability to understand the charges brought against them? Does she understand the role of the judge, the jury, the prosecutor, the defender? Is there at least some rudimentary understanding of sentences and so forth?

She will be placed involuntarily in a secure mental health setting and treated for her underlying mental illness. Once she has been treated, the courts will need to decide if the treatment brought her to the level of competency to stand trial. IOW did the treatment allow her to understand and respond to all the questions I just raised.

If she is found competent to stand trial, then the issue of criminality can be raised, that is, is she not guilty by reason of insanity. This defense is not very commonly used and is not frequently successful despite what people might think.

There is a different set of criteria for criminal responsibility that would need to be considered at that time.

But nothing can happen until she is competent to stand trial and she will receive treatment to try to restore her to that capacity.

https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/dshs-changes-may-mean-people-needing-mental-health-services-could-be-released-from-jail

In Seattle the mentally ill (including the murderer in the article) are supposed to be put in jail for a short time and then sent to a mental health facility.

But those facilities are full. The killer got paid $250 for each day in jail - totally over $60,000!
