His monologue in Field of Dreams brings tears to the eyes.
RIP
Admiral Greer:You know what you think about when you’re lying here. You know you’re going to die. You think it’s alright. You lived a long time. You had a family that loved you. You had a job that you thought made a difference, that you thought was honorable. And then you see this.
Dr. Strangelove came out in 1964.
Jones had a bit part.
Worth watching because every time I see it, I pick up on another detail.
He played Balthazar, one of the Magi, in Jesus of Nazareth. Conan’s nemesis Thulsa Doom in Conan the Barbarian. The voice of Vader. And so much more. May he rest in peace.
I had the pleasure of seeing him live in “Of Mice and Men” at SMU in 1975 and even got to meet him backstage afterwards. Had no clue who he was then but what an honor for a 12 year old.
“His role as the CIA guy in The Hunt for Red October was my favorite. RIP Mr. Jones.”
Incredible movie…nearly unbelievable cast for talent and star power.
Thinking the same thing. No one could have delivered it the way he did.
“No, I am your father”.
“I am your Father.....And this is CNN!”
They don’t mention his greatest role in any movie, Thulsa Doom in Conan the Barbarian.
From the Tampa Bay Times (1/16/2002): Plaque to honor actor names killer
Excerpt:
-PJ
A plaque intended to honor deep-voiced actor James Earl Jones at this city's Martin Luther King Jr. celebration instead had this extremely incorrect message: "Thank you James Earl Ray for keeping the dream alive."
The plaque, to be presented at Lauderhill's annual King celebration Saturday, was made by Georgetown, Texas-based Merit Industries at the request of Adpro, a Lauderhill-based business.
But instead of thanking Jones, it erroneously honors Ray, who shot and killed King in 1968.
Until the end of this past August, I lived in Dutchess County, NY for all but 10 years of my life. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Jones on several occasions, mostly at charitable events and fundraisers. I also met him several times at the local deli, gas station, restaurants, and walking on the street where he lived in Pawling NY. He was a gentlemen’s gentleman — kind and polite and respectful to everyone.
I loved JEJ’s role in The Hunt For Red October!
JEJ appeared at our County Community College years ago to open a Joint City/College Library. I attended.
No mention of “Gardens of Stone”?
He and James Caan were great in that.
Yes, but you missed the other five posts by hours. :-)
RIP!
