I went to a high school that was 15 miles south of Berkeley. Rachel Maddow also graduated from the school, albeit 10-12 years after me.
It was woke, before woke was even thought of. On April 1, 1972, I received my letter awarding me a 4 year Army ROTC scholarship. I was able to choose from over 300 colleges and universities, and the Army would pay all of my academic expenses.
When the word got out, I was a pariah on campus. Although I was never spit on, I was the target of verbal abuse and derision. Teachers told me to my face how "disappointed" they were with my decision.
The joke was on them: I graduated from Gonzaga with zero student debt and served as an Air Defense Artillery officer in Germany and Fort Bliss.
I have never attended a HS reunion, never had the desire. I shook the dust off my boots and never returned. Conversely, I've attended several college reunions, and have stayed in touch with several classmates.
Last summer, I reconnected with an old Army buddy. We got together for the first time in over 40 years. I was best man at his wedding, too.
I haven't spoken with him about "Command Sergeant Major" Walz. He's not deserving of any respect compared to the NCOs that I served with.
I had a teacher target me and ridicule me after he found out I joined the Marines. I went to the Corps....he ended up going to jail for embezzlement.
