When I was a med student in 1975 a patient came into the psychiatric ER with full blown schizophrenia. He had been well-controlled on stelazine which has a 90 day half-life. It also causes complete and total erectile dysfunction. He had gotten married exactly 91 days prior to his new bride bringing him to the ER. The psych resident commenced to playing with the poor guy, showing off for me and the other student present. If you’ve never been around someone in a full blown schizophrenic state it can be rather upsetting. Normal minds do not work that way. I finally spoke up and said “can we please give this patient some medication?” which earned me a dirty look from the bastard resident. Eventually four of us piled on the poor fellow and he received a much-needed injection of thorazin. I heard later that the wife got an annulment since he had not disclosed his condition to her and there had been no consummation. What a
