Freon became “bad” because the patents held by DuPont were about to expire. It was replaced by less efficient refrigerants that just happen to be DuPont patents.

The “Rest of the Story”, thanks. Fiber hemp became illegal because DuPont invented nylon rope or some other kind. Up until then fiber hemp was widely grown and used for much rope, sails on sailing ships, much clothing, and paper.

Yup! The whole Freon thing was a Dupont scam. And that was when patents were still good for 20 years. It’s even scammier now.
