Point Lobos State Natural Reserve has been named the most universally beloved park operated by the State Department of Parks and Recreation.

An analysis of tens of thousands of visitor reviews and ratings revealed that the park's stunning Monterey Bay scenery and easy accessibility from Highway 1 make it a favorite.

Visitors say the scenery of the Monterey Bay at the park is what makes it so special, along with it being easily accessible since it’s a short turnoff on Highway 1.

This is well deserved. It's small, but beautiful.

At MBARI (now in Moss landing) the first research vessel
was purchased as ‘Lolita’ and renamed ‘Pt. Lobos’.
The first ROV was ‘Ventana’. Started in Pacific Grove.

I’ve dove there many, many times. Beautiful place.

Monastery beach just to the north is another beautiful place with some gnarly waves. Plunging breakers, excellent diving.

Do you remember before COVID when a Scot rapist faked his own death there?

No, I missed that. I’ll have to look into that. The rocks at Monastery are slick and having someone die there after getting nailed by a wave is not unusual. The beach leads directly into a very deep submarine canyon and when the waves arrive, they suddenly peak and then break in a very short distance. The force will drag you right back into the ocean. Scuba exits are known as the “Monastery Crawl” and it’s a right of passage for Norcal divers (it’s not that hard).

Nice try on his part.

This guy.

A rapist who tried to evade justice by fleeing Scotland then faking his own death at one of California’s most dangerous beaches has been jailed for 15 years.

The small whaling museum on the north side is a must stop. Small, but lots to look at and absorb. The rangers who ‘man’ it can be a fount of info. What a great park! And if you park on the road, you should contribute $10 to support the system.

Yes, he picked the right beach. Someone drowned there not long before that.

In college, at Cal, in 1983, myself and a group, probably 12 in all, Americans, French and Italians, slept on that beach for two nights. No way they allow that now, I suppose. That was a great summer.

Thanks. We’ve been there quite a few times and love the place. It’s been said it’s the most beautiful place on earth where land, sea and sky meet.

Yes, that is a great museum!

I just drove to our place in North Idaho from the Bay Area. I stopped at the Sherman County Museum in Moro, Oregon. If you like small, local museums, this one is a must-see. It’s by far the best small-town / small-county museum I’ve been to. I got a private tour by the man who created the museum over 40 years ago and worked tirelessly to get it built. He seeded the many collections himself and invited the locals in Sherman County to donate items. He said they have the museum completely full within a couple months.

For 20 years I took a small group of summer program college students there (from out of state) before taking them on a whale-watching cruise in the afternoon. They loved it.

People park and walk miles to get to it, the parking is so crowded
