Multiple people electrocuted in ‘freak accident’ while enjoying swim in pool: police Police determined a wire on a pool pump had been pinched

Five swimmers in Indiana were electrocuted in what police described as a "freak accident" in a swimming pool Sunday afternoon.

Officers, fire and medical personnel responded to a home in the 2600 block of High St. just after 2:30 p.m. in the town of Logansport, Indiana, police said.

Police said five people – including two adults and three juveniles – were transported to local hospitals for their injuries.

Medical personnel transported two of the juveniles to different hospitals for further treatment.

A spokesperson for the Logansport Police Department described the incident to Indianapolis’ FOX 59 as a "freak accident."

Police determined that a wire on a pool pump had been pinched, causing a protective cover to break. The exposed wire made contact with the pool water and shocked the five swimmers, according to the station.

Logansport is located in Northern Indiana, about a 90-minute drive north of Indianapolis.

No. A wiring circuit was not done to code. A swimming pool requires a continuous ground plane around the pool, bonded to the pool, pump motor, heater, lighting circuit, and nearby outlets. The costs added to comply with an in-ground pool add about $4K to conform with code.

Include swim-out requirements and door alarms in the house, dual intakes (can't hold you down under water) and a fall-in wave monitor and it's around $10K.

All is money well spent for peace of mind and negotiation of your liability section of your homeowners policy.

Forget a diving board pool. Don't do it.

120 Volts kills more people than any high voltage by 1000/1.

“The GFI has a small transformer that is powered in opposite directions”

I’ve wondered how a GFI actually worked. Do they have them for DC circuits?

Me too. Just about had to get between the potential of the charged pool and Ann earth ground. Took them a while to figure it out.

Don't think so. There's no path for electricity to get to the pool itself.

I think they threw a submersible pump under the water and the wiring was bad. Something like this where the cord goes underwater.

I used these to get the water off the cover periodically.

I'm sure Superior makes a fine pump, just using this for an example.

“Electrocuted means killed by electricity. You take the electrocuted to the morgue not the hospital. Idiot writer.”

I’m SHOCKED that the author of the story doesn’t know the difference-not.

Thanks. I’m undecided if this represents a lack of skill, or crass attention seeking.

“120 Volts kills more people than any high voltage by 1000/1.”

It’s not the volts that will kill, it’s the amps.

“If you drop an extension cord plugged into a GFI protected circuit in water with a path to ground, it should trip, because some of the current will return via the ground path.”

We have a temporary outdoor light (to watch the raccoons) plugged in to an extension cord. It regularly trips the circuit’s GFCI when it rains.

The GFI is outside the pump.

Yes, here’s a link to one. The webpage says they are required on solar installations by the National Electric Code, which makes sense. They seem to be more complicated, but basically all you need is two ammeters measuring supply and return currents, and tripping if they are out of balance.

I can’t believe that Fox would write such ignorance in a headline. “Electrocuted” Means shocked to death. The article then says they were treated for their injuries. These people were not electrocuted they received an electrical shock. Electrocuted means- Dead. And that is by definition.

Same thoughts here. Idiots. And it seems like 90% of the people here did not catch that either. And I was so sure from the headline that multiple people were dead.

Interesting. AC makes some things simpler! Especially converting from one voltage to another.

Why not put the table next to the pool on the outside?
