Yeah, same goes for "Destination Weddings" where you're expected to cough up a couple grand.
The friend who got my wife and I together had such a wedding. We didn't go. It was fairly short notice and I was on a big work project and couldn't just leave for a week.

They didn’t “save” anything: they paid expenses, and they generated revenue.
Paying the fee was their guests’ decision. Personally, I would have sent a card and stayed home.
