My sister-in-law lived in L.A. in October 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. She said the entire town was in a panic with people grabbing all items they could off grocery shelves and hi-tailing it out of town, running red lights, causing wrecks.
In that region, the store shelves would be stripped clean in less than 1 hour. Those showing up late would be robbed and beaten.
