There was a plan so the capsule could be undocked from the space station automatically (no humans inside) but for reasons only known to Boeing they did not load the software required for this. As it is, someone needs to be inside the capsule to undock but the engineers don’t know if it will be safe to return to earth in the capsule.

I wonder if NASA was ever that competent.
If you look at the Apollo programs, NASA simply coordinated what was the best and brightest of American industry, which came together to offer their collective skills to government.
