True story of the Dem Presidential candidate Humbert H. Humphrey in 1968. Rioting and clashes had been going on for days. “The whole world is watching” was on TV with police fighting surges of anti-DNC convention protesters. Humphrey was protected in a floor high above the fighting in his luxury hotel suite.
He told his aides one night “I want to take a look down there for myself.” He opened a window and leaned out just as a gust of wind brought a cloud of police tear gas up into his face. He went into gasping and fighting for breath.
Amazing small event. All the Rite-Aids in Michigan are under “Store Closing” yellow banners. I went to buy some 40-60% off items left and while I was in line I saw sale dvd now also on 50% off. Chicago 10. About the 1968 Dem convention riots. I bought it and watched it. Not bad. Part animated with word for word trial transcripts plus clips such as Cronkite saying on the news coverage “I have to say this because it is true. The Democrats tonight are having their convention in a police state.”
I remember watching every minute of the convention as a thirteen year old. Thanks for the HHH story, I’d never heard that before.
