If he'd been able to think of it, it seems to me the cop who dropped from the connector roof could've told his lifting partner, "The guy on the roof has a rifle and I'm going to warn EVERYBODY!"

He could've shot five times quickly into dirt next to the evergreen trees, dropped his weapon, raised his hands and said to his partner, "Help me, bro!   Alert the command post!" and then (repeatedly yelled to all other cops in his area) "The guy on the roof has a rifle! Let's get him!"

I concur, although with what we know now, gunshots probably wouldn’t have got the USSS to do anything.
