I forget the linguistic name for that ‘e’ character.

The upside down e (ə) represents “schwa,” which is a vowel sound in an unstressed syllable where the vowel doesn’t make its own long or short sound. Examples:
2nd a and u - abacus (ˈa-bə-kəs)
e - problem (ˈprä-bləm)
i and y - analysis (ə-ˈna-lə-səs)
2nd o - bottom (ˈbä-təm)
