Finding our “missing link” progenitors is highly unlikely to be found among larger hominids.
The creatures described are not very "little", averaging about five feet tall.
The human average height in Europe in 1700 was only five foot, six inches.

He clearly states their stature was withing human range, the were not “little people” - shorter than you perhaps, but not dwarfs, pygmies or midgets.
