Calm down is perfectly fine. People do overreact and its fair and also proper to call that bad behavior out. You have no obligation to take that kind of garbage from someone that claims to be an equal in the relationship and who supposedly loves and respects you. Its also a major character flaw if its a habit of theirs.

I told my partner to calm down once. After it was all over with her, the doctor said I’d walk again, although I would always have a limp.

I'd be willing to bet that there has never been an instance of someone saying "You need to calm down" and the subject of that admonition saying "Gosh, you're right" and instantly reaching a serene state. And quite often the one saying "you need to calm down" is the one responsible for the conflict in the first place, and now doesn't want to take responsibility for the consequences.

I don't say "calm down," I say "I don't deserve to be spoken to (or treated) that way."
