I think the real turning point for me was when they decided to split the Summer Games and Winter Games into different years. I guess I was pretty young, but it just seems like after that, nothing about the Olympics was as exciting. Maybe that was the same time it went “corporate”.

Also when the Cold War ended, it took all the fun out of it, it was all about rooting against those evil Commies.

The other good thing was ABC playing the Olympic Fanfare before the program. It gave us time to get settled and watch the 30 minute broadcast.
