The debate performance was to get him to drop out of the race. A poor showing here would only push him toward resigning... unless that’s what the party wants.

Why wouldn’t they let him do a faceplant on the Oval Office desk? Do you remember (know of) the Admiral Hargrade character from "Get Smart"? He was 91 years old and had to be straightened and untipped regularly. I think he may have done a face plant as well.Big difference is that the Admiral used to be competent, and was neither stupid nor mean.
