I’m unclear about why the EC votes are in the toilet. My understanding is that Americans vote for the Presidential Electors, not the President. Then the Electors vote for the President in their State Capitals sometime in December. Then there’s an official national count revealed on January 6 in the House.
So when the Electors cast their votes in December, can’t they just cast it for the current Presidential nominee? It appears to me that the biggest problem is that the correct nominee’s name might not be on the ballots for the voters to vote for, so a Democrat voter who knows Biden is out may choose none. Can someone please explain where my misunderstanding is?
Even though you’re really voting for electors, you only see the name on the ballot, in this example Biden.
If he’s not running and name can’t be changed, then in those states voters only have the choice of Trump and whatever other names appear for the minor parties (Green, Peace & Freedom, Constitution, etc).
