Rather than fixing the problem by getting rid of the pros, we just joined them, making the event something different.

Agreed. We've destroyed the Olympics by allowing the pros to play in it. It's supposed to be for amateurs.

The original Olympics in Ancient Greece were also competitions between professional athletes and amateurs. The pride and prestige that Greek city states gained fro winning at the Olympics drove them to support professional athletes. What is wrong with the games now is that the Olympic committee makes insane money demands and the price of attending is far too high for the average citizens.

That, and allowing non sports in. Any activity that is judged subjectively should not be a competitive event regardless of the athleticism involved.
