I have a relative who gets SSI and it is enough to rent a room in a house and have access to the rest of the place. They have refused to work a full or part time job for some 20 years since getting SSI which is about $800 a month.
I don't know what it is in psychological terms (Jordan Peterson probably does), but there is something about a small stipend that often devastates human ambition (and I am referring to "ambition" of the good sort).
This feature of humans might also be the fundamental reason why communism is such an abject failure. In other words, it isn't just the lack of personal opportunity that kills communism. There seems to be something magically destructive to the human psyche about having just enough to get by.
