Interesting. So does this mean Don Jr, Eric, and Ivanka split their allegiance to Czechoslovakia, a country that doesn't even exist anymore?

People always think that our modern deference to the mother regarding the citizenship of her offspring has always been the way it is now.

This isn't true. Women could not transfer citizenship to children until the Cable act of 1922. Prior to that time, only the father's citizenship mattered.

The way it worked from 1776 onward was that the FATHER determined citizenship, and anyone marrying an American father automatically received American citizenship.

Therefore, if you had an American father, it didn't matter at all what the mother was before, she too was an American citizen before you were born.

This system is pretty well spelled out in the Naturalization act of 1795, and I think also in the naturalization act of 1790.

Only the father mattered. The mother didn't matter.
