Archie Bunker was actually intended to be a hated caricature of a right-wing bigot but a funny thing happened. America fell in love with the guy. Probably had something to do with his total lack of fear to express his (not always right) but brutally honest feelings and non-apologetic attitude.

Yep I’ve heard how Archie was supposed to be ridiculed by Meat head and other liberals on the show. Instead Archie became a big hero to viewers. And Meathead was disliked by many.

You may find this interesting. The NY Times reported that many Americans thought of Bunker as a “loveable bigot”.
Back when people had a sense of humor minorities felt insulted that they were supposed to be insulted.
