Following the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump, unity was expected to be the hallmark of the Republican National Convention for the presidential candidate.
"I am running to be president for all of America, not half of America, because there is no victory in winning for half of America," Trump said.
But the message of unity rings hollow for some in the LGBTQ community, who say they have repeatedly been the target of Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee, and others on the national stage.
"It can be difficult to stay hopeful when anti-LGBTQ sentiment comes to town," said the LGBTQ group Fair Wisconsin in a post on X. It continued, "But Fair Wisconsin knows that this sentiment is not who we are. The majority of Wisconsinites support the rights of LGBTQ+ people, and with fair maps for the first time in over a decade, we’re hopeful about the opportunity to shift the tide on anti-LGBTQ+ legislation."
There has been a record number of bills targeting the LGBTQ community in state legislatures across the country -- including transgender youth care bans, restrictions on drag shows, and more -- topping more than 500 bills nationwide so far in 2024, according to the ACLU.
This comes as LGBTQ people, particularly transgender people, face higher rates of violent victimization, discrimination and bullying, according to the CDC and the Williams Institute.
Still, several RNC speakers, including Trump, openly and continuously took jabs at transgender and nonbinary people throughout the convention.

From my limited and anecdotal experience, the majority of conservative people do not care about other peoples proclivities. I am too busy with my own life. I just do not care and I am not in a position to judge others. It is not the GOP or conservatives abusing gays. It is other gays and the dimocrats who are using them like they do all minorities.
Queers can pound sand (or whatever).
In some (but not all) tribes gay men were tolerated but only so long as they dressed like women and did women’s work. They were not allowed to go into battle or belong to men’s societies, and did not have gay marriages.
Not sure if they were allowed into women’s societies, either, even though confined to being treated as women... and in these particular tribes the women were typically not equal to men and could be punished quite brutally by their husbands for things like infidelity, so being treated like a woman wasn’t a pleasant thing. And the historical accounts, as far I have read, do not mention how these tribes handled gay females (if there even were any), or if the tribe even recognized gay females the same way they recognized and dealt with homosexual men.
In the cases I know of where women did occasionally rise to become recognized as warriors due to unusual circumstances enabling them to demonstrate competency at it, they happened to be the wives of men, so there is no reason to assume they were homosexual females, either.
Modern people (including native Americans who know as little about their forefathers’s culture as everyone else), have been creating myths about LGBT equality among their people by simply omitting the parts they don’t want people to know. They want everyone to believe that they were considered normal and sane or were respected.
Unity is a two way street. Why don’t they start off with what they are willing to compromise on before they accuse the other side of intolerance. Maybe, just maybe they are the intolerant ones preventing “unity”

I am of the belief that the LBGTQ folks just want to be worshipped. They want everyone to bow down to them and admit that they are “normal”. Normalcy would mean keeping that crap to yourselves and follow the laws of your town/county/state/country you live in. If you obey the law and STFU, you will be left alone. If you are assaulted or worse because of what someone else feels about you, that’s on them and you should have them prosecuted to the extent of the law.
I don’t need you to acknowledge me because I’m straight, identify as my God-given gender. I don’t want to bend over backwards for you because you are a man thinking you are a woman. It’s THAT simple. Along with that...keep ALL of that crap out of schools. We don’t need ANY type of sex education except for biology class in high school. Keep all of it out of elementary and middle schools.
