That was when the Olympics symbolized hope because it was a place where the Communist world and the West could meet and compete peacefully. That gave it a transcendent quality, a powerful reason for existing.

Now that reason is gone, and the Olympics has been co-opted by people with a much different agenda. Any institution with great public exposure will attract a certain type of person.
