In the case of a monarch from a royal family, one could say either a king or queen could make sense as the leader of the whole shebang--because a monarch has the use of other members of his family, both male and female, and history--all reinforcing his power, influence, and effectiveness.
That's not true in our system, where we elect a man (or woman) to office to act as both an individual and a leader. The leader has no family, tradition, or history to back him up and give him gravitas in the eyes of his constituents and produce national unity.
A man has more natural aggression, a bigger voice, and a higher likelihood of being able to lead a group of strangers to united, and when necessary, violent action.
