Every single article mentions he’s a registered Republican Pennsylvania has a closed primary system. There was a big push for activist democRATs to change their registration to Republican to cause chaos in the Republican primary elections. That could be why.

John Hinckley’s parents were said to have been Republican donors. They can report anything that they want about him now that he is no longer in a position to respond.
